Induction Project 2018

Task One:
The piece of theatre that I learned the most from was Mack The Knife - The Threepenny Opera. One of the main things that I learned from, was the creative use of set and staging. The different moving elements of the set made the play emersive and far more engaging. It was inspiring as it was a technique I have not learned before. In addition, the moving set also gave the play a more whimsical tone, which contrasted the dark set and themes of the song. The shadows that were created behind the singer at the start created a humorous yet ominous tone. It changed the play from something that had one layer to something that was multi-layered, it made me feel as if I was traveling through the areas of London with the actors performing the play. Moreover, the melodramatic style of the actors made it very clear of the story the singer was narrating, almost like pictures in a book. The use over the top facial expressions and body movement created an almost grotesque atmosphere. Moreover, when the actors used string to represent blood and the innards of the victims, it taught me that to demonstrate gore and violence you can use more light-hearted and humorous techniques. Furthermore, the use of music creates a rhythmic beat that is a catalyst to move the play forward. It taught me that you can use techniques other than dialogue to help propel the play onwards.
Another play that I learned from was Love and Infomation. The abstract set and use of varied scene lengths taught me how to create an interesting and engaging piece of theatre. There were multiple stage entrances and exits, that made the audience keep on the edge of there seat as they had to pay attention to keep up with the plot of the scene.  Moreover, the body movement by the actors to create animals such as snails showed me that you can use things other than props to create realistic animal portrayals. It created a funny tone that gave an element of comedic relief. Comedic relief was also offered through the actor's use of innuendo and sexual humor. The different scenes that did not all seem to link gave a scatterbrained and hectic effect to the play. It almost gave the idea that we as the audience were looking into someone brain at there thoughts.

Task Two:

Title And Author:
Fallout by Roy Williams

Plot:
There is a group of young people all living on the same estate. Kwame (a young black boy) is killed and is suspected to of been murdered by another young boy named Emile. The play explores ideas of racial inequality with regards to police investigations and the school system. It also explores themes of gang crime and relationships between young people. The play follows the story of the investigation and what happens when a £20,000 reward is offered for naming the killer.

Characters:
- Dwayne
- Emile
- Shanice
- Ronnie
- Joe
- Matt
- Clinton
- Perry
- Manny
- Miss Douglass

Setting:
- A south London estate.
- A burger shop in south London.

Style of writing:
The style of the play is written in south London slang.

Likes:
- The use of slang
- The short length, it was to the point and did not drag out making it not boring.
- The scenes were short and pushed to play forwards meaning that the play stayed engaging and it did not give you a chance to lose interest.
- There were not many stage directions so it gives you an ability to put your own artistic flare on the play.

Dislikes:
- The play was not particularly conclusive.

If you were cast who would you play and why:
If I was cast in the play I would either want to play Shanice. This is because I think that I could play her character well. I believe that I could show her attitude and tough outside deminer through my use of body language.
